Surrogacy is an arrangement in which a woman, known as the “surrogate” or “gestational surrogate,” agrees to carry a pregnancy and deliver a baby for another person or couple, who will be the legal parents of the child. This process is used primarily by couples who are unable to conceive naturally due to various factors, such as fertility problems, illness or lack of a functional uterus.
In surrogacy processes, the most commonly used method is in vitro fertilization (IVF), in which an embryo is created in a laboratory using the intended parents’ gametes or donor eggs and/or sperm, depending on the case. This embryo is then transferred to the surrogate’s uterus.
